'I will not make a movie to suit an actor'

'I will not make a movie to suit an actor''I will not make a movie to suit an actor'
A K Lohithadas is a director who believes in the power of script and not the star while making films
His tough demeanour does not betray his sensitivity. His casual ways, rugged looks and unkempt mane are only a deceptive veneer. For deep inside Ambazhathil Karunakaran Lohithadas, is very conscious of what he projects to the people at large. And in letting his work talk, he is unparalleled.
A K Lohithadas is not a director who is in a hurry to make as many movies as he can but he is particular that the movies he makes are powerful in their content and poignant in their portrayals. "I don't make films hoping it will become a hit. If it becomes one then you could follow the formula that made it a hit. I wish to tell a tale and films are my way of telling a story," Lohithadas told Metrolife. He was in the City on a personal visit.
If you have watched Thaniavarthanam, directed by Lohithadas, then you would you would agree with what Aparna, a film buff says: "It's a poignant tale one that is disturbing and truly unforgettable." A script-writer, active in theatre, Lohithadas turned a film director with the critically acclaimed Bhoothakannadi (The Magnifying Glass) in 1997. However, his later directorial ventures have only been moderately successful.
Malayalam cinema had by then entered a phase where some of the movies were made only to suit the star and not the other way round. Rajamanikkam is a typical example where Mammootty donned a role that was rather too colourful and unlike his choice of role. Lohithadas says he will never make a movie to suit the character. “I will choose people who suit the character in the script. You would never find a hero in my story. Why should I make a movie to promote a star?” he asks.
He always tries to match the actors' style of acting and body language with the traits of the character. He is also among the first directors to introduce new faces in Malayalam cinema. Meera Jasmine was introduced and encouraged by Lohithadas.
Of late, Lohithadas hasn't been too active on the directorial scene. What kept him low? “There are no new breed of actors and the existing stars have grown too old and have been cast too often," he says. He thinks the industry lacks a new generation of actors and actresses who could add new meaning and dimension to Malayalam cinema.
His movies lay less emphasis on the plot or commercial gimmicks and, instead, display a more character-oriented approach.
What is his take on remakes? His Kasturiman has been remade in Tamil. "If it's worth it then any movie can be remade. It must be suitable to the subject," he says. After a two-year break, Lohitha is all set to cast out his directorial net. He's casting Mohanlal in Bishmar in Malayalam and working with Prithviraj for a Tamil film which he is yet to title.

Sreenivasan: Superstars cheat viewers

Sreenivasan: Superstars cheat viewersActor Sreenivasan lashed at the superstars and the waning quality of Malayalam films at a meet the press conducted at Calicut Press Club on Monday. "The superstars control the Malayalam film field without considering quality by acting in all the substandard films offered to them. With this act they are cheating the public. Superstars are not outdated and that is why they continue as superstars. But without selecting the best scripts, they are getting involved in the production of low quality films. They can wait for good films. It is more regretful that they are least bothered to do good roles.
The practice of writing for a Superstar, considering the mannerism is not advisable. In foreign countries designated agencies scrutinize the script and approve it and then the producers accept it. After this process they decide the director and actors. This is the method to be adopted.
There is no such division in films called Art and Commercial. There are only two types of films, good and bad. The films I do make me happy. Even if you give me Rs. 15 crores and 15 years, I cannot make the kind of film that Satyajit Ray made. When asked about the future plans of his son Vineeth, he replied, let him choose his own path. I don't think he would act in films in the future. He is about to direct a film. Director of the film Makante Achan, V.M. Vinu also attended the press meet and said, "It is difficult to get a prominent actor in Malayalam to accept a role with a wife and teenage son. Under these circumstances I approached Sreenivasan and he wholeheartedly accepted it."

Mohanlal film Red Chillies Trailer Open with www.metromatinee.com

Mohanlal's Red Chillies, directed by Shaji Kailas is carrying high expectations on it. The script of the movie is handled by A K Sajan. After the debacle of their last venture Alibhai, the team of Mohanlal and Shaji Kailas has to strike here to prove that they are still good team to produce hits like Narasimham and Aaram Thampuran.
Scriptwriter A.K. Sajan has a special talent to explore the fascinations of a campus. It is evident from his previous venture Chintamani Kola Case that features nine wild girls in a Medical college 'Mirchi Girls' who are accused of the murder of a college mate Chinthamani. This notorious gang of campus girls was an interesting point of this investigative thriller, donning Suresh Gopi as an enigmatic criminal lawyer.Following the same genre of presenting models as female gangs, A.K. Sajan has once again come up with another script named Red Chillies that will star a gang of nine ladies. This time, these nine ladies will play radio jockeys. Superstar Mohanlal will play Omar, their net friend in this movie.
Produced under the banner of Rajaputhra Movies, Red Chillies is a murder mystery revolving around a gang of nine Radio Jockeys working with FM 919.1. Mohanlal's character is named Omar, an NRI businessman settled in the Gulf and running this radio station in Kerala. Omar is an impeccable personality with multi-lingual talents; he can speak English, Arabic and Malayalam fluently. All his female staff are madly in love with him and he always communicates through e-mails to his female jockeys. On a New Year eve, he promises that he will reveal his love for one of them. But in a terrible twist in the plot, they are murdered one by one.Interestingly, Malayalam playback singer Ranjini Jose is making her first appearance on the silver screen with this film. She plays the main character Isabella, one of the nine Radio Jockeys. She has also rendered songs for her character. Also in the cast are Vijaya Raghavan, Thilakan, Jagadeesh, Manian Pillai Raju and Sreekumar. Music is by Vinu Abraham and camera by Shaji. Red Chillies, directed by Shaji Kailas, is the first release by superstar Mohanlal in 2009.

Remembering Prem Nazir 'The Evergreen Hero'

Twenty years ago, on January 16, Prem Nazir faded away from the silver screen for one last time. Nevertheless, memories of him remain evergreen. With over 600 films as hero to his credit and that too with more than 100 films opposite the same heroine; starring with over 80 heroines and an average of 39 releases a year, it might be tempting to limit Nazir’s remarkable career to world records and statistics. But figures alone cannot explain the phenomenon that he was.
Nazir may not have been the ciritics’ favourite and he may not have won too many awards, but he conquered Malayali hearts like no actor did, before or after. He was quite simply, there first superstar; their first romantic hero.
Nazir has often been dismissed, sometimes too easily, as just a star and not an ‘actor’. But even his harshest critics could not have ignored his powerful performances in films such as ‘Iruttinte Athmavu,’ ‘Kallichellamma,’ ‘Dhawani,’ ‘Murappennu,’ ‘Anubhavangal Palichakal,’ ‘Padayottam,’ ‘Vida Parayum Munpe,’ ‘Azhakulla Saleena,’ and ‘Nadi.’
The man who made his debut in Malayalam Cinema with ‘Marumakal’ in 1952 ended his career, rather unexpectedly, with ‘Dhwani’ in 1989.
People in the industry used to comment that Nazir’s face was expressionless. Little did they realize that he was then doing what we now call natural acting. And he did at a time when there was an overwhelming influence of theatre in our cinema.

Geetha Vijayan again to ‘Harihar Nagar'

Geetha Vijayan who is now cornered to character roles, treasures her debut role of Maya in the super hit ‘In Harihar Nagar’ as the best thing that happened to her, in the industry. This biggest hit of the nineties projected her to stardom and she bagged a number of lead roles in many films of the time. But with in a couple of years, the actress who failed to create any notable hits thereafter ,slumped off to smaller roles that were never promising enough for one, who has such a good start.
Any how, Geetha Vijayan is again getting a chance to play the same role in the new sequel to the ‘In Harihar Nagar’ titled ‘Harihar Nagar-2’. The movie which features Lakshmi Rai in the lead will also have Geetha Vijayan's Maya as an important character. ‘Hariharhar Nagar -2’ planned to be on theatres by this Vishu is fast progressing with its shoot at Kochi. The movie is the first independent venture in direction of actor-producer Lal.

Priyanka in heroine-centric films

Malayalee actress Priyanka, who recently made a TV appearance in 'Idea Star Singer', a popular reality show in Kerala aired by Asianet TV, is extremely lucky! She was launched in 2006 with the much-acclaimed Bharath starrer Veyyil, the first-ever Tamil film screened at Cannes as part of Cannes Film Festival 2007. Remember the hit song of the film "Uruguthey maruguthey orae parvayaley"? Now, Priyanka is making steady progress in her career and getting chosen for heroine-centric films.Have you heard of the Malayalam film Vilambam, the poignant tale of a gang-raped girl and her fight for justice? The film has not yet been released in India, but has been screened at several international film festivals where it was critically acclaimed by international film critics and pundits. It's Priyanka's first film in Malayalam.

Vilambam has made everyone in the industry take notice of Priyanka’s acting skills and her ability. Though the film has an impressive lineup of veterans like Thilakan, Biju Menon and Suhasini, the focus is always on Priyanka and there are only two scenes in which she does not appear, which is something quite rare for a heroine! Following this, she has bagged meaty roles in Bipin Prabhakar’s Samastakeralam P.O. opposite Jayaram and National award winning director T.V. Chandran’s Bhoomi Malayalam opposite Suresh Gopi. Both films have already completed post production works and are now expected to release in January 2009.

Not just Malayalam films, Priyanka has also secured a prominent role in the forthcoming Vanam Partha Seemaiyile (Tamil), whose audio will be released soon. The film is considered as a catapult that will elevate Priyanka’s status in Kollywood. Priyanka says she is no hurry and would rather wait for a meaningful role rather than work in some run-of-the-mill movie. We wish this brilliant actress the best of luck.
